U.S. Army stand-down connects Soldiers with voting assistance in Vicenza, Italy
VICENZA, Italy — U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), helped Soldiers navigate voter registration and absentee voting during a voter assistance stand-down at Caserma Renato Del Din and Caserma Ederle Oct. 14, 2026.
Held in response to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s directive, the stand-down gave service members dedicated time to receive assistance through the Federal Voting Assistance Program, a nonpartisan government program that provides registration and absentee voting information.
At Caserma Ederle, Michael Zadlo, a programs and policy specialist, and Maria Castro, a military acceptance agent with the Directorate of Human Resources’ Military Personnel Division, assisted Soldiers with voter registration.
“Some folks believe they are registered and they are not registered, so just keep up with it,” Zadlo said.
Zadlo said he asks Soldiers which state they vote in and whether they are registered before explaining options for requesting and returning absentee ballots. Those procedures vary by state, he said.
The stand-down built on existing voting assistance for personnel stationed overseas, including briefings for newly arriving service members, Zadlo said. State-specific registration and absentee voting resources remain available through FVAP.gov.
“You have a voice, no matter where you are at,” Zadlo said.
